Bringing Weather Into the Everyday: Encouragement for Parents Seeking Connection and Curiosity

Weather is something we all experience, yet we rarely stop to notice how much it shapes our days—and our connections. Think about it: talking about the weather is one of the first ways people start conversations. It gives us a shared focus, a common experience, and a way to connect without pressure. From an occupational therapy perspective, that’s powerful. Simple moments—like noticing a chilly breeze, planning around a storm, or marveling at a rainbow—help kids build awareness of themselves, their environment, and the world around them. They learn flexibility when plans change because of rain, emotional regulation when heat or wind affects comfort, and perspective-taking when they see how others respond differently to the same weather.

In this episode of The OT is IN podcast, I had the chance to talk with Ross Forsythe, Executive Director of the National Weather Museum and Science Center, about how weather can be so much more than small talk. Ross shares how exploring weather sparks curiosity, supports communication, and creates hands-on learning opportunities for all kinds of learners—especially in homeschool environments. Together, we dive into how weather connects science, social skills, and daily life in a way that’s both meaningful and fun.

How does this play out in a real homeschool household?

Think about your own home for a moment—breakfast dishes on the counter, kids searching for pencils, someone glancing out the window to announce, “It’s raining again!” These are the kinds of everyday moments that can easily slip by—or become small opportunities for connection and learning. Instead of brushing past the comment or checking the forecast, try using that moment to notice together:

  • What does the weather feel like to you today?
  • Did you notice you needed a jacket, or that your hair feels different in the humidity?
  • Should we bring an umbrella when we head out later?

These simple questions build awareness and reflection—skills that sit at the heart of emotional regulation and flexible thinking. Just like learning to sew or paint, children develop these abilities over time, through practice and guided curiosity. Organizing Curiosity, Honoring Differences

In Ross’s programs, the entry point to weather is always broad—music, art, aviation, emergency management, storytelling, and even entrepreneurship. Just like a co-op handicraft session needs adaptations for ages and abilities, weather-based conversations also flourish when you tailor your approach:

  • Littles might use emojis or pick out today’s outfit based on how the air feels against their skin.
  • Older kids might be drawn to data, measuring and charting humidity, predicting rain, or exploring how weather affects careers (think: a golf course superintendent vs. an airplane mechanic).
  • Creative types can be encouraged to write weather-inspired songs or stories, while STEM lovers might try their hand at model simulations or photography.

No single “right” way—just an array of starting points, each a valid door into understanding and connecting.

Practical Routines in a Weather-Filled Day

How do we make weather discussions more than just polite chit-chat? It starts with presence, something Ross models in his own family. A simple, “Wow, it feels brisk out here—what do you think?” can open the door for everyone to share, reflect, and even anticipate.

  • Build a routine around “What’s the sky telling us today?” at breakfast.
  • Forecast not just the weather, but your day: “Looks stormy—should we think about changing our plans?”
  • Tie in practical executive functioning—planning, flexibility, emotional regulation—by involving children in weather-based decision-making (“Should we pack rain boots for co-op?”).

Over time, children don’t just learn about clouds or thermodynamics—they practice noticing, reflecting, anticipating, and adapting. As Ross noted, weather is “bigger than ourselves.” It’s a reason to reach outside our own experience and to feel secure sharing with others: “Remember the big snow last Christmas?” or “I felt the storm in my joints too!”

Ross Forsyth is a seasoned startup founder with experience managing multi-million dollar projects. He is an engineering graduate from the University of Oklahoma who began his career working in oil/gas field operations, later transitioning to reservoir engineering where he was responsible for over $100 million in reserves estimates. Finding his passion in building digital and technology experiences, he transitioned to software development and led teams to design and build digital experiences. He’s worked with clients such as Pepsi, Balance Athletica, Punch Bowl Social, Climate Reality Project, US Air Force and many others. He is an entrepreneurial engineer with experience in the space of Virtual/Augmented Reality and product development. He most recently followed in his father’s love for weather in helping to create the National Weather Museum and Science Center, where he currently is the Executive Director.
