Description
Every year each kid and I have a planning date. We do it a few weeks before we return to our school rhythm so I have time to buy supplies and organize. We do this because…
1) Our kids have remarkable insight into their brains and bodies, if they don’t, this is a time to encourage it. My student had the idea to buy a whiteboard to write their daily plan every day. But, they want it in his room rather than at the table so it gives him a reason to run upstairs between tasks. “I need the heavy work, Mom”. (Can you tell he’s the kid of an OT?)
2) It’s all written in the same journal year after year so that we can reflect on growth. It’s not set in stone, we can always adjust. But, it is one of my most treasured reflections. 3) It reminds them that I’m on their team and that they have a say in education. When they help make their goals, they are also more persistent.
These skills of planning, organizing, evaluating, and then persisting are all executive functioning skills. Frankly, I’m more interested in how they do with following through than many of the actual academic studies.
