Description
Our role is to work with clients on what they specifically need and want to do or how they occupy their time.
Occupational Therapists play detective on the cognitive skills, motor skills, and social skills that each of those occupations requires help to support the client in achieving their goals in those occupations. Sometimes that requires building skills like strength and coordination. Sometimes that requires helping the person to understand their strengths and advocate.
Sometimes it requires changes in the environment- you may see us changing the positions of chairs and seating for handwriting. I often work with families on the order or set up of the day for the time when a person is typically most alert or regulated. We might make adaptations to an actual occupation like adding grippers, assistive technology, or dressing aides.
Occupational Therapy is a broad field and different therapists specialize in specific areas. Each therapy setting has different expertise and supports children in different ways. Only you will know which service providers can best meet your child’s needs.
